Geek Chic: favorite shops for the stylish fan-girl/woman

I’m a huge nerd and love to wear clothing inspired by different fandoms, but I’m also an adult with a professional job, so I’d at least like the option to be able to wear items to work. I’ve never really been into graphic tees and especially as I get older I prefer subtler items that might not be obvious to the average person, but that other fans will recognize.

Below are a list of my favorite Geek Chic designers and sellers, and I’d love to hear if there are any others out there that I’m not aware of. Also if you have any pictures of items you own and want to share them please feel free, and if possible link to the site you got them from.

**My List**

* [Elhoffer Design]( One of my absolute favorites Elhoffer Design is an independently owned and run business, and all the clothes are made in the US. The business owner is extremely responsive to questions and clearly cares a lot about her customers being happy with their purchases. I personally own three dresses from her and five sweaters, and they are all impeccably made and fit beautifully. Sizes XS-3XL. Because she’s a small business she usually offers pre-orders at significantly reduced prices from what the final price will be for in stock items. My[ Elhoffer Design Collection](
* [Sent From Mars:]( Mostly bags and accessories, some leggings. I have [this bag]( and I really love it, well made and more spacious than I expected.
* [Rock Love Jewelry]( High quality fully licensed jewelry for a number of fandoms including but not limited to Marvel properties.
* [Castle Corserty]( A bit more costumy, but I’m including it because again her items are beautifully made and high quality. You can also find her shop on [etsy](
* [Volante Design]( Pricey, but absolutely stunning. Specializes in coats, jackets, and hoodies.
* [Think Geek]( These last two are I think much more widely known, and I feel like the items they have tend to be a bit more obvious, but I’m linking them just in case.
* [Hot Topic]( These last two are I think much more widely known, and I feel like the items they have tend to be a bit more obvious, but I’m linking them just in case.

Her Universe (who sells in Hot Topic and Think Geek) is a great brand. Ashley gives back a lot too which is wonderful.

To add to the list, I love Out of Print clothing as well!

I hate to say it, but I don’t think there’s anything *stylish* about a brightly colored Bowser clutch or a [schoolgirl uniform sweater on an adult woman]( That’s not to say these items aren’t fun or well made, but I think they work against looking put together, and I wouldn’t take them to work. I keep it to enamel pins on my jacket lapel or small accessories only, like Starfleet earrings, for example. I also have visible but tasteful/not obvious Twin Peaks and Mass Effect tattoos. Stickers on my laptop, that sort of thing. I just wouldn’t personally show it with how I dress, which is about making myself look and feel fierce, confident, current, and put together.

    Check out Box Lunch.

Wore a Sailor Moon choker a few weeks back when I was a little dressier at work and two people recognized it in my office.

I own a few fandom items, including a [Kaylee from Firefly messenger bag]( (from Thinkgeek, although they no longer sell it) which is now covered with pins from all sorts of fandoms, a [Hogwarts Express wallet]( from Amazon, and I had these [Harry Potter bracelets]($pdp_hero_zoom$) from Hot Topic but they broke rather quickly.

When I worked in a more laid back small business, I’d use the Firefly messenger bag as my purse frequently. I didn’t care what my 5 co-workers thought, and the bag was always hidden in the back office so no customers saw it. I don’t use it for work now because I changed jobs and pass dozens of people in the halls on the way to put my purse away. I would wear the Harry Potter bracelets to work because they’re pretty subtle. I use the wallet daily, as well as a [Harry Potter Tervis mug]( as my main coffee mug at work.

I’d love to wear things that are subtly nerdy to work, like [this dress]( or things with [subtle patterns]( on them that only other nerds would recognize. I’ve worn a dress [covered in tiny cats]( to work and got lots of compliments, so I think I’d be able to get away with nerd prints as long as I don’t have giant Yoda heads plastered across my ass or something.

I also really love the idea of disneybound style when it’s done subtly. It’s basically the idea of copying the color scheme and general style of a character without it looking like a cosplay. I think something like that would work well for office attire. I have a cute black and white polka dot dress I’ve worn to work with a gray sweater, but if I wore a red sweater and yellow shoes it would be a Minnie Mouse disneybound look. Here are some other examples (not necessarily for office wear, but just as examples of the premise):

    – [Anna from Frozen](–anna-disney-disney-cruiseplan.jpg)

    – [Maz from Star Wars](

    – [Voyd from the Incredibles 2](

    – [Frozone from the Incredibles](

Most of the stuff I would splurge on I wouldn’t wear to work. But I they do fun collections like Marvel, dc, Dr. Who, Harry Potter. The quality is great even though it may be on the pricier side I get a ton of compliments whenever I wear something because of how unique it is.

You can add to your list… what was… formerly? [Welovefine]( – I have some leggings and a D&D themed dress that I love from them. Mostly not too subtle, but things like leggings where they can often be colorful in the first place, covered in chibi D&D monsters or Avengers is fun.

Yes I know it’s not official merchandise.

RedBubble is a little pricey, but their unisex tees are high quality and they wash very well. I have [this Loki t-shirt]( and it’s one of my favorites!

I met her on a (now shut down) Phantom of the Opera forum, and now I’m saving up for one of her amazing creations! If you are a fan of Hamilton, Disney, and Phantom of the Opera, I’d give her shop a look!

I absolutely *loved* the comparatively subtle fandom stuff sold on the Bioware store. That and their stuff has been largely of good quality. But the store was shut down because I believe EA is moving to some other official provider, so I’m not sure what will be available once it reopens. I hope they keep the same style of stuff – I really love most of my gear from there!

Check out scifeye candy on etsy, she does nerdy bikinis. She worked with me to make one have a bit more coverage on the bottoms and custom sized.

Reply Hero Within has some nice, more subtle DC Comics themed clothing, although sadly the women’s line is pretty in-your-face. I’d love it if they made their blazers in women’s cuts! They said they’re also going to start adding some Marvel stuff.

I have this ST:TOS skirt in red.

I’ve worn it out and about with a plain black jersey top and I think it’s pretty subtle. It just fits me so well and is really flattering on that it’s a shame to only wear it at a once a year con!

I have never purchased from them, but one of my friends is a big fan of Svaha. They sell academically nerdy stuff- mostly science-related prints but they sometimes have other things too. My friend has a dress inspired by the Library of Congress classification system!

I really wish more places had generic Trek merch. Or DS9 era Trek merch. I’ve gotten more into it after getting an over the air antenna since there’s a channel locally that’s like 24/7 Star Trek, so seeing things entirely TOS or nonexistent makes me sad. I love Elhoffer’s stuff, but every email is about Star Wars. I want Trek, dammit.

Someday I’ll get the science blue set of ring and necklace from RockLove, though.

[Musterbrand]( is mostly men, but they do some women’s clothing and honestly I’m all about some of this men’s clothing for myself! A lot of it is super subtle fandom detailing and is really well done.

Insert coin clothing doesn’t make a lot of clothing specific to women but most of their stuff is unisex and very cute. Their designs are all video game based, though.

If you know how to order from Japan, [Super Groupies]( makes the most sophistocated/subtle fan fashion (for anime) that I know of. The kind that can only be identified as fan fashion by a distinctive pattern to those in the know. It can be hard to find a piece that’s already been released–I’ve had an eye out for the [Alphonse Elric purse]( on secondhand sites for months. ([Here’s al]( for reference)

This is a little more out there but premium bandai ([]( is the website where a lot of those new fashion items for Japanese anime are found e.g. sailor moon, cardcaptors, star wars, Evangelion etc.

Lots of fashion, home goods and jewelry items but they are expensive. Sometimes stuff on the website makes it into stores but not always. It does ship internationally for many items.

I don’t have any suggestions to add. I just wanted to say I sympathize and have had similar thoughts! I have a small collection of geeky t-shirts but find myself at a stage of life where I want to step up my game and wear a geeky style that’s a little more than the t-shirts.

I am not seeing it so I’ll mention [CowCow]( They don’t have character stuff so much as a gigantic variety of prints

And [Charlie’s Project]( has some fun fandom stuff as well.

I’ve never bought from [Svaha](, but I would like to. They’re more math/science geek rather than fandom geek. Some of the items, like the Solar system necklace, are quite toned down. Others, like [this Rutherford-Bohr cardigan](, are pretty clearly nerdy but in a teacher way, not a teenager way. They’re also really, really good about putting pockets in everything.
