What’s your “FFA Made Me Do It”?

I was putting on my shoes today and realized that I definitely got [these shoes](https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/sam-edelman-lucien-embroidered-pearl-stud-ankle-strap-pumps-100-exclusive?ID=2628305) based on a FFA comment (I have forgotten who it was, but they are fabulous – let me know if it was you!).

So what’s your “FFA made me do it”? It could be an item, style, outfit, material, etc.

ASOS farleigh mom jean. Wide-leg pants. Secondhand shopping. Using wardrobe tracking apps. Tailoring. The Curated Closet. LL Bean and Eileen Fisher. My glasses. Basically most of my wardrobe and my shopping habits. I am one with the hivemind but I think I’m mostly ok with that.

A user mentioned that learning that her feet were wide completely changed her heel shopping (for the better). I was having such a horrible time finding pumps that fit me, then I measured my feet and discovered I had wide feet! Bought some Rockports in W and had my cinderella moment.

Treating myself to a nice [Madewell](https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/BAGS/crossbodybags/PRDOVR~G8078/G8078.jsp?color_name=english-saddle) purse. I’m not one to spend a ton of money on one item, but everyone kept raving about them and it seemed like a good investment. Haven’t even had the bag in my possession for a week and I’m in love.

The other “major” suggestion I’ve purchased per this subreddit was Gap underwear. After witnessing Aerie’s quality go down hill first hand, [these](https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1094221&pcid=1015387&vid=1&pid=260230322) are my new go-to. Very comfortable/soft, zero signs of wear thus far, and slightly more expensive than Aerie yet worth it.

Also, better use of Pinterest and making multiple clothing and accessories lists on my phone (different lists for different seasons; my “thrift list”; list for basics + replacing existing things; the aspirational wishlist; list that’s just shoes).

omg like so many things. This sub will be the death of my wallet.

    – The Lotus from Opelle Creative (my favorite purchase)
    – A pair or boots from Bed Stu
    – A blouse from Mango Violeta (someone here swore by them and I bought a bunch if stuff, and returned everything but one blouse. The blouse is in shambles so I won’t be making another purchase from them)
    – A pair of jeans from The Jean Shop, just this weekend
    – A fast fashion haul from Rue 21
    – A shirt from Diyanu (in response to me specifically asking about african prints) 1 it’s being shipped now

And I have a ton of things bookmarked from FFA too – shoes from Barker and Scarosso, bags from Mismo and Kara, clothes from notperfectlinen, etc

Mostly FFA has made me discover new brands that are so much better for my size than a lot of more mainstream ones in the US/mall brands. Now I have two items from NotPerfectLinen(plan on ordering even more!). Also Everlane and Sezane are ones I love but hadn’t heard of before.

The actual item that I bought off seeing it on FFA is [this amazing fancy night out/event dress. ](https://www.amazon.com/French-Connection-Womens-Orabelle-Dress/dp/B0754Q1CFV?th=1&psc=1) Here it is [on me. ](https://imgur.com/a/NMEXgIJ) I had saw it off an FFA instagram but it wasn’t available in the US, then saw a Recent Purchases comment about it being available and it was an instant buy.

    – Acne Jensen, Acne Pistols (love both and have been wearing them a lot)
    – Asos Farleigh – got it right on the 3rd pair, but great jeans
    – Jockey skimmies – perfect under skirts in the summer
    – Macabre Gadget [huge marble tiger ring](https://store-macabregadgets.com/products/white-panther-ring) – I usually am quite a tiny silver jewellery person but this ring makes me feel all powerful – hear me roar!
    – Anatomical heart [necklace ](https://bjorgjewellery.com/products/anatomic-heart-small) – exemple of aforementioned small silver jewellery, I love it, it’s tiny, discreet and circumvent clichés of a heart necklace by not being too ‘sappy’ – not that I have anything against sappy, believe me!
    – Arket – I just got my white unicorn black pencil skirt, just below the knee, doesn’t ride up, doesn’t turn, doesn’t wrinkle, doesn’t muffin-tops. It had a slit that was a tad too high so I took inspiration from FFA crafters, took me 10 min to sew it up. Perfection.

All of the above have been good FFA recs. I always do a ton of research when ‘committing’ but I am starting to be happy with my wardrobe- I got to the ‘quality over quantity’ point that is often mentioned here, even if I feel like I might be veering to the ‘I want a large quantity of quality items’, but that is my problem and am working on it ( dive bombed into 2nd hand, basically all clothing mentioned here is from there, I developed excellent stalking skills!).

My only sort of ‘meh’ was a pair of Rag&Bone [Simone pants](https://www.rag-bone.com/womens/bottoms/simone-pant-W2557223A.html) . They are fine but I much prefer the LK Bennett [Aden ](https://www.lkbennett.com/product/TRADENVISCOSEMIXBlackBlack~Aden-Skinny-Leg-Trousers-Black) – much thicker material, fall better, never pill. I think I was just disappointed as I had to get the Rag and Bones from the US and my expectations were high, just to realise that I already had ‘better’ in my wardrobe.

An other good thing I got from FFA is that there seems to be a good amount of us unashamed to feel like stripe tops are always fair game!

Stylebook (tracking app), tons of brands and designers like Rick Owens, Margiela, Acne Studios, AllSaints, Uniqlo, Elizabeth Suzann, Margaret Howell (via MFA, actually), Patagonia, Mansur Gavriel, A.P.C. (again from MFA), COS, Birkenstock… Man the list goes on and on. I’ve also purchased individual pieces of clothing that people in WAYWTs were wearing, and I formed a weird habit of taking a photo of my outfit every day.

I’d say the daily WAYWT photo taking was probably the single biggest help in improving my style. It got me over my body image issues, got me to analyse clothing, fabric and fit objectively and just made me more confident about my fashion choices. (It did help that you guys are so flipping nice and always encourage me with my fashion experiments – thank you!! <3 [This was my first WAYWT photo in Spring 2016 after just buying the first new clothes for my purged wardrobe, a Zara denim jacket and Adidas Stan Smiths haha](https://i.imgur.com/xQ8QxI5.jpg)) I’ve changed so much as a person in these past couple of years that it feels a bit unreal, and FFA has been a big influence in it.

FFA has definitely made me branch out of my comfort zone. Sadly most brands are very US oriented or out of my price range but since browsing here I’ve become so aware of the different ways to dress and flatter my figure as well as how to dress for work whilst still feeling comfortable as myself!

Purchases of mom jeans, white sneakers, wide leg culottes and Uniqlo linen pants were definitely the result of me browsing in this sub.

There was a thread here a while ago that asked that we pay attention to the outfits we see throughout the day and report back with the best ones. I don’t know why it never occurred to me to do this before, but it is now one of my all time favorite people-watching prompts. It has made me very aware of what is trendy, how these trends can be well or poorly executed, and how some people can truly own what it is they wear.

The other day I sat across from a retirement-aged woman on the bus. Nothing about her outfit was something eye-catching or anywhere near my style, but when I looked closely, I noticed that her outfit was actually on point. Everything fit her well, the colors complemented one another and her hair and skintone, the materials were all high quality and well cared-for. The subtle brass-colored hardwear on her bag even matched the metal of her earrings. I realized that even though nothing about her really stood out, her outfit was deliberate. This woman knows what looks good on her and I suddenly had a ton of respect for her without even speaking to her.

    Thought of y’all 🙂

No brands per se, but really evaluate my overall look. I’m a print loving maximalist, in the extreme minority here on this sub, although my Pinterest has plenty of subdued neutral looks in addition to my 70s botanical embroidery lovin’ Cali girl vibe. My goal is to work the prints into sophisticated, cohesive outfits.

I realized I was focusing on color and vibe and prints rather than fit/overall cohesion and I’m now on my third 10 x 10 and I feel like I look so much better than my first round!

[Round 1](https://imgur.com/a/Pm3NkeL) These are fine. But the proportions are off and I’m not loving the fit on many pieces.

[Round 2](https://imgur.com/97a7pss) Still maxing it out a bit at times (I love a good print mix) but I see improvements

[Round 3](https://imgur.com/a/BildWti) Only a couple days in but I feel like I can see the difference: the outfits look polished and cohesive and the pieces fit well.

Also: the half tuck! I knew about it but haven’t tried it and now I love it! 😉

    I love this question!

FFA has made me think more critically about the fabrics I select in my clothing and as a result I’ve moved towards a quality vs quantity mindset in my wardrobe. I’m incorporating more cashmere and silk into my wardrobe as a result of FFA.

I also have a better idea of how to style my outfits by adding accessories such as jewelry, a scarf, or a hat!

Not a specific item, but FFA made me aware of so many different and amazing styles (particularly through the WAYWT and inspiration posts). This broadened my own fashion horizons and inspired me to try out new styles, fits and combinations and generally things I would have never considered in the past. Breaking out of my fashion rut and exploring new styles made me more in touch with myself, and that’s such a liberating feeling.

General: FFA has helped me with color combinations. Over the years I’ve gotten better and bolder with my color and patterns choices, but I still struggle. Recently put together a muted blue-gray striped shirt + warm yellow pants + olive green shoes* (“split-analogous color scheme”)… and… it’s a great look! I’d never have considered trying it before, thanks FFA!

I’m still pretty new to this sub, so far for specific recs, just Old Navy Pixie pants and a clothing steamer (a life saver for the ironing-aversive!).

This is more relatable when done with r/SkincareAddiction for me. Peoples outfits on here inspire me to the point where I’ll hunt for specific styles and colors rather than items.

But users on SA are soul-less bitches because they know damn well the second I see someone write a glowing review of something I’ve wanted for a bit, I’m placing that damn Sephora order. Same with r/Fragrance. I did a blind buy of Le Labo Santal 33 and I don’t even like the damn fragrance. thankfully my sister became obsessed with it so I just gifted it to her.
