What are your favourite dresses / jumpsuits with pockets?

I got [this dress](https://imgur.com/NK3zQ6g) and [this jumpsuit](https://imgur.com/a/DAU1phL) last summer, which both have pockets, and I’ve finally realized what a godsend pockets are! How did I ever live without them before? Where was I supposed to store my phone, earbuds, subway pass, loose change or my own damn hands when I don’t know what to do with them? I’m spoiled, and it’s now become downright irritating and inconvenient to wear something without pockets.

Don’t even get me started on women’s pants and blazers that have fake pockets! That’s just insulting, because brands would never even think of putting fake pockets on men’s clothes. Are we somehow less deserving of functional, practical clothing? How much more money does it really cost to make those fake pockets functional? How much further must brands drive down production costs, on top of fake drawstrings and non-adjustable straps?

The problem is, dresses and jumpsuits (especially dresses) with pockets are genuinely hard to find. The more formal the piece, the less likely it will have pockets. Yesterday, I was tempted to buy a sundress that I didn’t even like simply because it had pockets!! So FFA, where did you get your magical, practical dresses and jumpsuits with pockets? Links / pictures would be lovely. What do you put in those ~~bad boys~~ pockets?

I have two jumpsuits from Uniqlo that I love – they’re both from a couple years ago but they look like [this](https://goo.gl/images/NEdUsD) and [this](https://goo.gl/images/yYUPYx). I typically carry my phone, card case, and keys and am good to go!

Hold on. Some women’s stuff doesn’t have pockets because they’d mess up the way it’s tailored or simply because it’s meant to be very tight. Men don’t wear that kind of form-fitting clothing. Never attribute to malice what could be attributed to a design decision.

A lot of my dresses and skirts have pockets because I wear a lot of full-skirt dresses, and full skirts are an excellent vehicle for those really nice, deep pockets (although certainly adding pockets is an extra touch that cheaper brands don’t always go the lengths of). That said, I’ve never been a pocket fiend and I don’t really get the obsession or the ire around pockets that persists in the women’s clothing community. I don’t have any trouble finding any type of clothing with pockets, and whilst I like that they allow me to humor my slouchy aesthetic even in formal settings, I don’t actually find them that useful. Given most smartphones are the size of small televisions now, they don’t fit in pockets – and I don’t want my keys dangling around in there, certainly not at a formal function. Unless it’s a very deep pocket I’m scared that stuff will fall out, so unless I’m bringing a jacket or the pocket zips up, I’m bringing a bag.

I find dresses with pockets everywhere – Target, Asos, H&M, more expensive brands. It helps to understand construction a little bit so you’re not harboring unrealistic expectations. For instance, if it’s a bodycon dress, it probably doesn’t have pockets. If it’s a very tightly tailored dress, it probably doesn’t have pockets. If it’s a short dress made with flimsy fabric, even if it does have pockets, they won’t hold anything. 50s style dresses on places like Modcloth often have pockets because that was the aesthetic at the time.

Obligatory plug for eshakti.com. All of their dresses and jumpsuits have big, deep side seam pockets. Their size range is huge, and you can customize the length, sleeves, and neckline of pretty much everything. I have several dresses from there, and they are pretty much all I wear.

A few years ago I made a vow to never buy any dress or jumpsuit without pockets (unless, of course, it’s so perfect for me otherwise that I have to have it – but that happens pretty rarely).

I do a lot of my shopping at thrift/vintage spots, and generally go through the racks fairly quickly, checking for pockets before I ever pull it off the rack or try it on. And I do some internet shopping by including pockets in the search terms.

I’ve also made my love of pockets known far and wide—which has led to a handful of pieces being passed my way because a friend found a unique dress with pockets and thought of me.

So keep looking! And let your friends (or romantic partners) know that’s what you’re looking for, so they can keep an eye out, too,

I don’t think that dresses with pockets are particularly rare…but I do prefer looser fitting styles that can easily accommodate pockets. 2 dresses from past seasons that I’m still wearing a lot these days are:

    1. [**Ace and jig anchor line dress**](https://cdna.lystit.com/photos/2013/03/29/ace-jig-blue-anchor-line-dress-product-1-7570111-932497938.jpeg). Super comfy, I love the weave and fabric, and has a summery “nautical” thing going on. Also, it’s bike-friendly (I can’t stand bottom that are so restrictive that you can’t ride your bike in them).

    2. [**Everlane sleeveless chambray dress.**](https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-sleeveless-dress-light-denim). Also super comfy. Light material without feeling flimsy or being sheer. Nice everyday dress.

I 100% agree with you about pockets. I have a pants with real pockets requirement, and I recently decided to expand that to skirts and dresses because I shouldn’t subject them to the soft bigotry of low expectations. As has been mentioned a couple of times, almost all of eShakti’s dresses and skirts have pockets. I recently bought [this](https://passionlilie.com/collections/fair-trade-dresses/products/mao-black-dress) dress from an online, fair trade shop. Many of their dress and skirts have pockets. [https://www.matatraders.com/](https://www.matatraders.com/) is another ethical fashion where some of its dresses have pockets; if they do it’s mentioned in the description. Also, on Modcloth you can filter dresses by pocket status.

Oh I have one. [This beaut Ted Baker Yee print dress](http://www.californiavintageoliveoil.com/best-summer-dresses-sale/ladies-cheap-white-ted-baker-yee-woodland-toile-skater-dress.html) is just amazing. I wish I could get another one like this in a different colour (this one was my wedding dress). It has *usable* pockets, as in, they are deep, secure, and HIDDEN in between the plaits so you can’t really see them even if there’s stuff there. The dress itself is solid, as usual per TB dresses it’s well tailored and made of tough material, just really comfortable, flattering, girly but also professional if you go for a [less bold print](http://www.tedbaker.com/uk/Womens/Clothing/Dresses/Skater-Dresses/YVAINE-Statement-bow-dress-Mint/p/140299-MINT). And, they come with pockets <3

I am obsessed with this one from [Frank & Oak](https://www.frankandoak.com/product/77-2510122-002/v-neck-tencel-jumpsuit-in-true-black). As someone who is 5’1″ the fit was [super dramatic](https://imgur.com/VGztXrX) & I love it. The fabric material is lined and feels really thick and secure. Best part? The pockets are deeeeeeep.

As to what my friend said “You look like someone who has brunch at 12, but has to teach defense against the dark arts at 1”.

I can fit my phone and portable charger in my pocket with room to spare.

This is not what you asked but.. learn how to sew and EVERYTHING can get pocket makeovers. 😉 Especially side seam pockets. That first example is a bit harder without having extra matching fabric but it’s fairly easy to add pockets with fun prints hidden inside the side seams of your dresses like your own little secret that nobody knows about!

So I guess that’s technically where I get my magical, practical dresses with pockets? 🙂

Not only does it have pockets, but it’s only attached at the front, not around the back, so it means you don’t have to have your outfit pooled around your ankles when you need to go to the bathroom.
